Mention Japanese punk-pop and one band instantly springs to mind: Ellegarden.
Now, don't hit that back button just yet. I may have said punk-pop, but by no means should you let this stop you from looking into them.
Ellegarden is becoming, if not is, one of the most popular punk-pop bands in Japan. They've made good progress, from when they formed in 1998. So far, they've managed four albums, four singles, and two mini-albums. They have an upcoming tour scheduled, and they've just recently played at Asian Kung-fu Generation's Nano-Mugen Festival, which took place on July 9th.
One important fact that you must be reassured of, is this: Ellegarden is, in fact, Japanese. Now, why is it necessary to reiterate this? Because upon listening to them, I'm sure you would believe, almost without a doubt, that they were an American band. Why is this? It's not just because of their music style. It's also because of Takeshi's great English diction. In fact, the majority of Ellegarden's songs are in English. And quite the English it is. There are only very few, if any at all, mispronunciations in a song. Admittedly, Takeshi's English is not quite perfect, however, it's getting there.
Ellegarden has often been compared to bands such as Blink182 and Simple Plan. Now, if you like those bands, then great. You'll adore Ellegarden. If you absolutely despise bands such as that, then?. I'd advise you to not jump to conclusions too quickly. Admittedly, Ellegarden is quite comparable to such bands. However, there is something different about Ellegarden. No, I am not just saying that. Ellegarden has a feel to their music that separates them from the stereotype of punk-pop being trash.
If one were to describe Ellegarden's music in one word, it would probably be the following: Extremely catchy. All right, I admit, that was two words. Yet, only saying "catchy" would be quite the understatement. One may not quite be able to say that Ellegarden's music is? "groundbreaking", however, one can easily say that Ellegarden's music is addictive. I, the one writing this, can honestly say that there is not a single Ellegarden song that I do not like. Well, except for their first album. But aside from that, I find every song to be enjoyable. Yes, it's kind of crazy, almost ludicrous. But give them a try; you might see what I'm talking about.
